Peace

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Jake and Brita were searching for not just a mouse.

Their stockings were hung by the fridge with care,

In hopes that mom Laurel would willingly share.

In just a short time they were snug in their beds,

While visions of chipmunks danced in their heads.

It wasn't just chipmunks they dreamed of that night,

But also the rabbits who they made take flight.

In a short time there arose such a clatter

They jumped from the couch to see what was the matter.

And there to their wondering eyes did appear

The spirits of others that used to live here.

First, there was Josie who made the most noise,

Chasing the others, especially the boys.

But Ari and Teddy would not let her run

Because they decided she'd stifle their fun.

Tori was circling to see what to do

When Kobie and Liver quickly ran through.

Then they ALL came together to join in a song

While Brita and Jake, wide eyed, looked on.

The message they brought on that night of a birth

Was of PEACE and GOOD WILL to all on the earth.

This message was clear to those who would listen,

As clear as the snow which often would glisten.

And then, in the distance, was the sound of a whistle

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But they were heard to exclaim as they flew out of sight,

"Peace to all of God's creatures, and to all a good-night!"

NOTE:  I woke up with this running through my head this morning
and in 30 minutes had it done.  Truly I believe I had unseen help!

Olivia vom Drachenberg

imag0916bJune 21, 1999 – September 12, 2012

Sweet Olivia... it had to happen eventually... almost blind and almost deaf, she was an inspiration to those who knew her. She brought a sense of calmness to my house with her ever positive attitude. Even when a stroke took away her ability to walk and to think clearly, she always seemed to have a smile on her face when she was comfortably positioned on the couch. The signs were clearly there but it became instantly obvious to me yesterday (Tuesday 9/11/12) when I returned home that last night would be her final night. She is now with Ari, Teddy and Kobie who I'm sure were there to help her along in her journey. It truly is the end of a generation of dogs who chose to call my house home.

..2012.9.12 Olivia

To my Sweet Olivia…

2007.12.2 Olivia (12)a-003I know not what your life was like before you came to me
But this I know and it’s a fact that it was meant to be.

I knew before I met you that you were surely mine
And when you came to greet me, I knew it was the time.

The time for me to take you home and teach you how to play,
The time for you to work out what was getting in your way.

You trembled as I trained you and shook when we would play
But soon you channeled all of that and even learned to stay.

We took some tests and, sure enough, put letters by your name
They made no sense to you, I know, but showed you played the game.
5.11.08-21
When we would go to take the tests the people’s heads would turn
To see the beauty in your coat and in your heart they’d learn.

You tried your hand at many things but herding, it was fun
To get those sheep to go each way and always on the run.

You loved it in the spotlight and people sure loved you
And when you did your demos they loved you through and through.

We traveled cross the country, several times if you recall
But the test we liked the most, was when you were best of all.

So as you aged you always were the beauty of the pack
And you were special in my heart, so just remember that.
Olivia's Best-13
As time went on your legs got stiff and it began to show
That your time was winding down and you were getting slow.

The guys that left before you were the leaders of your pack
And I know you surely missed them and wished that they were back.

Your best friend was still around and always by your side
And when your sight got very dim, Miss Kobie was your guide.

And then, like that, she left you too, in a most traumatic way
So you became the one in charge to calm the rest who stay.

At first you seemed reluctant to be the leader of the rest
But in time you showed us all that you could pass the test.

We went for walks just you and I and you could barely hear
But even so from all these walks are memories I hold near.

You loved to play and have some fun and people came to see
The little girl with attitude who never said “poor me”.

You were a model for us all ...a leader you became Olivia's Best-9
And even though it was so hard, it wasn’t just a game.

I know you’re safe with your two guys who crossed a bit ago
And they I’m sure were waiting there to show you where to go.

Your generation now is gone, you were the last, you see,
It was a ride I’ll never forget as long as time shall be.

And so my Sweet Olivia, I hold you in my heart
Because I knew that you were mine, for sure, right from the start.

The end of an era….

IMG_0811

There have been signs over the last few weeks.  Walking in to walls and heading in the wrong direction.  Because Olivia couldn’t see well, she knew the house in her head….  how many steps from the grass in the front to the steps where she had to raise her leg – where and how long the ramp to go down to the yard was – how to find mom at her computer to get attention.   It was different now.  Very disconnected but them sometimes she seemed fine.  Until yesterday. I returned home from work and she was stumbling and could barely walk.  I got her outside and then she couldn’t find her way back to her couch.  When I got her there she couldn’t get up the step to it.  I suspected then that her time was running out.

I spent the night with her on the couch hoping in the morning she would be better.  She wasn’t.  There were times when she was sitting that she looked just fine – but she was sitting and not moving.  I made a vet appointment for the afternoon and said goodbye to her then.  My friends and I laid her to rest next to Kobie on the hill in the woods – right near her guys, Teddy and Ari.

This is the short version…  maybe I’ll add more later…  We miss her already…. she was such a huge part of the dynamics of the house that it will take time to adjust.

It truly is the end of an era ….

Facebook…. Olivia….

It truly is amazing the power that this crazy thing called Facebook has….  I’ve experienced it before and it never ceases to amaze me how supportive Facebook friends, many of whom were real friends before Facebook) can be.  I posted about Olivia before going to bed and within 30 minutes over 20 people has responded.  Now it’s morning – 7:30 am – and I am looking at 20 likes and 43 comments….. overwhelming….

So here it is…  what I posted with a new cover photo….

Hawk

IMG_6518

I don’t see a hawk every day… or every other day…  sometimes I don’t see one for weeks at a time.    I remember the first time I really took notice.  Teddy and I were out front of the house.  I was working in the garage and he was snoozing in the front yard.  He was not doing well and I was worried about him.  Then all of a sudden I heard a commotion and a hawk swooped down I swear not 20 feet above the ground and then flew up and over the pine trees.  I thought at that time it was unusual and that the hawk was trying to tell me something.

Since then I’ve seen many hawks – sometimes not for weeks at a time but then just when I feel I need affirmation about something – there it is..  a hawk telling me I made the right decision and everything will be ok.  At one point I researched the symbolism of the hawk and this kind of summarizes what I found.

The hawk is a messenger bird.  Usually when we see a hawk it means to pay attention because a message is coming. Hawks represent clear sightedness.  They bring courage, wisdom, illumination, creativity and truth and give us the ability to see the larger picture in life. They can help to overcome problems and make wise use of opportunities.  This is the hawk’s 'medicine'.   When the same animal keeps coming to us in real life or in a dream, it is bringing it's medicine to you.   The hawk brings a message, a good one, to let us know you are on the right path and whatever problems we are wrestling with we will solve because hawks medicine has been given to you.

Yesterday, after laying Olivia to rest we walked to the house and were chatting in the driveway and a large bird swooped by and went behind some large trees…  you guessed it…  Hawk was bringing me a message that everything would be ok….

I’m sure by that time Olivia was on the other side running free and playing with her pack…  ready for a new adventure…

Added December 2012hawk flying

I’ve written about hawks before. They speak to me… tell me when I’m on the right path…. If I wonder if I’m making a good decision or heading the right way, a hawk will fly over and I’ll feel good about it! Doesn’t matter if I’m on the road, at home in the house or in the yard.

Anyway, yesterday I was driving to work and merging onto Highway 41 from County Road II. I saw a hawk to the right who had been sitting in a tree but was taking off. He flew up just a little, swerved to the left coming in front of me and then continued to the left. As I watched I was watching the highway. I knew I had a separate lane to get onto the highway but as I turned my gaze to the left I saw a truck (someone late for work maybe?) speeding up beside me as I was merging… Had I not watched the hawk I most likely would not have seen the truck that was in my blind spot.

Hmmm… thanks Hawk for pointing that out to me!

Bath Time ....

So I gave Olivia a bath today and thought back over the years…. when I had:
  • one dog - Josephine - there were monthly trips to the groomer.
  • two dogs - Josephine and Ari - trips to groomer were every 2 months.
  • three dogs - Josephine, Ari and Teddy - I bought a grooming table and hand hose to attach to  shower head.
  • four dogs - Josephine, Ari, Teddy and Olivia - I bought a super duper 4 hp blower for $300 and it was the best investment I could make to groom the dogs.
  • five dogs - Josephine, Ari Teddy, Olivia and Kobie - I bought double arms for the grooming table.
  • five dogs - Ari, Teddy, Olivia, Kobie and Tori - I started if possible, only blowing dogs coats outside (4 long coats).
  • five dogs - Ari, Teddy, Olivia, Kobie and Brita - I thought to myself - don't short coated dogs blow less coat?
  • four dogs - Olivia, Kobie, Brita and Jake - I decided baths were only given outside when the weather is warm with a hose.
  • three dogs (now) - Olivia, Brita and Jake - I decided that Olivia gets the warm tub bath and the others really have no idea what a bath even is... hose yes... bath no...

If the dogs could talk I'm sure this is what they would have said about grooming:
  • Josephine - "I'm going to be beautiful, right? Could I have the PINK scarf around my neck?"
  • Ari - "yeah, whatever - hurry it up… and don’t even TRY to cut my nails."
  • Teddy - "If this is what you want me to do, I'll do it for YOU - but you can't make me like it."
  • Olivia - "I’m going to die here, I just know it."
  • Kobie - "Put me in that tub again and you'll be REALLY sorry! I don't care if you string me up on 2 sides of the grooming table, I'll still be able to swing around so you can't blow ME dry!"
  • Tori - "I looovvvve the attention - take note you other guys... she likes ME best!"
  • Brita - "Oh come on - do I really have to???   I'm here to work, not be a beauty queen"
  • Jake - "OMG, OMG, OMG - this is SO much fun... spray me more with the hose and I'll catch the water!"
Jake's preferred way to bathe.....

Oldies but goodies! (Brita annoying Teddy and Ari on the Fence Line)

So I came across some oldies but goodies. I was telling someone recently how Ari used to chase the UPS truck and school bus and run back and forth until it was gone. The girls... Olivia with the cone and Kobie the black dog typically just do as they were doing and watch and wonder "WHY" I'm sure!  This video, by the way, was 2 months after Ari almost died during an Addisonian Crisis.  He has lost his coloring and his shape but not his attitude...

When Brita was a puppy I said.. "Teddy, here's a puppy for you.. raise her up good!" And what he put up with! It was however, the only dog I ever saw him really play with. Brita was like that... even today... she would make him comfortable and encourage play. It was wonderful that Teddy go to have that relationship as he aged..

Titles Anyone?

So here it is…  the good, the bad and the ugly!  Titles and certificates that my dogs achieved from 2003 to 2009.  50 I in all when counting Therapy Dogs.

The beginning….  Josephine, the German Shepherd who made me a dog trainer was a great Therapy Dog but never got a title.  NOT THAT I DIDN’T TRY!  I believe I won the award for the most failures on one dog while trying to get her Schutzhund BH.  She always found a new and exciting (to her) way to humble me whether it was running off the field to greet the spectators or simply playing catch me if you can.  In hindsight, HAD she been an easy dog to train I most likely would not be a dog trainer today.  She did pass the Canine Good Citizen Test but certainly not on the first attempt!DSC_8067

The first title I put on a dog was a BH in Schutzhund and it was Olivia who started it in 2003.  Ari soon followed after, as did Teddy and then Kobie with BHs.  This was the generation of dogs who taught me lesson after lesson. They all were Therapy Dogs and received their Canine Good Citizen certificate.  Ari was a bit of a butthead (mostly decoys called him that) and we repeated the BH and achieved a Tracking 1 title in Schutzhund.

While I was strugglingCopy of DSC_9251aa with Ari, I took my 3 Amigos (as I called Teddy, Kobie and Olivia) on the road.  They each got a AKC Companion Dog title and Olivia went on to get an AKC Companion Dog Excellent title. They also got a UKC Companion Dog title and again Olivia went on to get a UKC Companion Dog Excellent title.  At the same time they each got an AKC Rally Novice title.  These 11 titles each required 3 legs (that’s a total of 21!) and we did them in a four month period in 2004.  In addition, Olivia and Kobie each received a Herding Instinct Certificate.  Teddy turned out to be a sheep chaser and I never gave Ari a chance to meet the wooly whites.

In 2005, I was introduced to a sport called PSA and it was perfect for Ari.  It was a tad wild and crazy and a boatload of fun!  However, like Josephine before him, Ari found yet new and different ways to humble me.  Two trials in Appleton for a PDC…  failed.  A trial in Baltimore for a PDC – failed.  Two trials in Baltimore handled by Greg Williams and he almost got his PSA 1 title…  ok..  so he CAN do it… now he has to do it for me!  Two trials in Northeast PA – failed. All this in the summer of 2005.  Two trials in upstate New York for a PDC – first day – failed…  second day.. p2010.9.4 PSA trial (49)aassed – woohoo!  For the NY trials I took Olivia along with us and entered her both days for a TC which is the obedience part of the PSA 1 title and each day she was the high score of all the dogs that were entered (60 over 2 days)!  By the way, this was in the days when at a PSA trial maybe 15% of the entries actually passed.

Over the winter of 2005-06, Ari and I trained and trained and in June of 2006, we traveled to Baltimore to compete.  Finally, not only did we achieved the PSA 1 title but also took FIRST place!  For the rest of the summer, we “played” in Level 2, passing the obedience portion but never achieving the title because Ari never really “got” the “call-off” scenario!  Late in 2006, Ari competed in his first AKC trial getting his Rally Novice title with excellent scores and he also passed 2 legs of a CD.

In February of 200IMG_28407, Ari was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease almost losing his life before AD was diagnosed.  After a few months of recovery it became apparent that he couldn’t compete so we did one last trial in Bourbonnais, IL in PSA Level 2 on 07-07-07 which was a fitting day to retire.

Tori was another dog I had at the time and she simply did NOT like obedience but she was an excellent Therapy Dog and passed the CGC test with ease.  Then in 2006, I placed her as a Psychiatric Service Dog – not bad for a dog adopted from a rescue at one year old who thought she was a princess!

2007. Enter Brita.  Before she was a year old she had not only a HIC but also an Herding Tested title.  In a few months time she achieved her Rally Novice, Rally Advanced and then Rally Excellent titles and passed the CGC test and became a Therapy Dog.   Next was a BH, an AD which is an endurance test, then a Schutzhund TR1 and a Tracking 1 from Service Dogs of America (SDA).  She also achieved the Watch Dog (WH) and Rescue Suitability (RH) titles in Schutzhund and then in 2010 rounded it out with a PSA-TC in Illinois after an unsuccessful attempt at a PSA-PDC in St. Louis.

And then there is Jake…. who squeaked by the Canine Good Citizen test to get the certificate and now is probably doing something way more important than any title and that is becoming a Service Dog.

So there you have it.  Will I continue to train and trial Brita and Jake?  Train – yes…  trial…  we’ll see… It may be a situation of “been there, done that” and I’ll go on to other things… as I said, we’ll see..  Whatever happens…  it HAS been a good ride!

Olivia and the mouse….

…..yes … if you look close … it IS a mouse…

Olivia had what was probably her last grooming this year or shall I say the last time we will blow her coat out in the front yard. After we were done I wanted to take some pictures so called to her and she bounced toward me and then stopped, and sat down right next to a dead mouse! I didn't realize it was in the pictures until I looked at them later. Needless to say, I kicked the mouse away and so there was some sniffing around and then she settled in to look beautiful. I was regretting that I didn't have my good camera but pictures with my phone are better than no pictures at all!

I was struck by how the red showed up in her coat because that is usually brought out before sunset…..  then I realized that it was before sunset now that it sets at 4:30!!!

Out for another walk..

We lost walkin’ time for a month when the temperature hovered around 90 and the humidity was high.  Yep..  not only did Olivia not want to go out but I didn’t either!  It was brutal…  and we didn’t have it bad compared to other parts of the country!

So it cooled down and we’re out again!  She is such a hoot!  When she could see and hear, she hated having her picture taken..  the BIG EYE you know, watching her…  and she would hear the click and run the other way!  Now, she has no clue I’m taking pictures and I holler really loud at her and she perks up and prances.  She likes to go through the long grass… I think all of my dogs like that.  When she’s had enough, up the nose goes and she turns and heads through the woods to the house.  I, however, since the woods were filled with mosquitos, decided to take the scenic route past the flowers and corn!   Click on the pictures for close-ups!

It was an interesting evening…

….the weather was beautiful…  no 100 degree heat index and minimal mosquitoes a rarity these last few weeks.   And it was EAA week – that’s Experimental Aircraft Association to you non-Wisconsin folk.  What that means is that little Oshkosh Wisconsin’s airport becomes the busiest airport in the world for a week as half a million people descend on the town to look at…  well.. experimental airplanes.  Not bad for a town of 66,000 people!   Years ago, I volunteered for the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau and greeted people arriving at the Appleton airport for the week and a 2 hour stint gave me free transportation to the EAA plus free admission to the event AND to the flight line… which means nothing to most people but I got to walk around all the planes along with the people who knew something about them.  My favorite part was the air show and the my favorite of all the performances was in 1986 when the  Italian aerobatic display team Frecce Tricolori performed. (ok…. no I didn’t remember who they were but the internet is a wonderful thing isn’t it for research!)

Meanwhile… back on the ranch..  …well not a ranch but you know what I mean…    I thought maybe with my long lens I could get some pictures of planes since they fly over my house on occasion.  What I learned tonight:

  • I really need to learn more about my camera.  It wouldn’t auto focus on planes in the air and I have no idea what the other settings mean!  So…  switch to dogs…
  • When you have the long lens on the camera and decide to then take pictures of dogs, they have to be AWAY from you – not hanging out at your feet.   OK then…  flowers….
  • Again… distance for flowers…  now I could have come into the house and switched to another lens but that thought didn’t occur to me until much later!

Regardless, the flowers were coming up nicely and the dogs were just happy that it was a nice evening to be outside.    Olivia seemed a bit stressed but then not being able to hear and see well would stress me out a bit!  The photo of the evening I believe was the head shot of Jake below.  He is such a handsome dude, don’t you think?  Smile

Happy 12th Birthday Olivia!

You’re beautiful as ever!!

These shots were taken this morning (with my phone) as we took our morning walk.  Olivia has very little vision and can barely hear but you would never know it!  She knows her way around the yard, on the trails and through the woods!

And then there was one…..

The Three Amigos…  all long coat shepherds… all came into my life in a years time.  There was Teddy who came to me in March of 2001 and was just over a year old.  Olivia showed up 6 months later and six months after that I was blessed yet again when Kobie came into my life.  Their stories are documented here:IMG_4639

I remember fondly a trip to PA not long after Kobie joined us to see my mother in a nursing home.  They would get so excited and feed off of each other and when we traveled home the long way through upstate New York to do some sheep herding, I would back the van up to a motel room, open the door and let them run in!  It was there that they were tested for herding and Teddy became know as the sheep chaser (it’s hard to look innocent with wool in your mouth). Kobie was beautiful to watch… very smooth but oh, so easily distracted (“this is lots of fun but hey wait… there is a butterfly over there”).   And the first time Olivia saw the sheep she couldn’t stop trembling.  Since we weren’t sure what would happen I was told to hold on to the line (sheep cost $100 and that’s what you pay if your dog decides to have one for lunch).  A minute or so after getting in the pen we realized that she was truly a natural at it but did everything way too fast – must have been all that nervous energy!

So… here a a post that was originally written in 2005 that I posted a few years ago.  The Three Amigos   What awesome dogs and SO beautiful!  Oops… Teddy was HANDSOME, the girls were BEAUTIFUL!

Below are photos taken when we we planting flowers.  Olivia chose to help, Kobie was happy watching and Teddy..  well he liked the pool… wait it’s a sandbox…  no… it’s both!

So now… May 2011… there is one… Olivia.. almost 12 years old… and , my guess is that it won’t be long and they will be together again…
